2019 Toyota 86
In the world of rear-while-drive compact sports cars, there are some that just stand out. The Toyota 86 is one of them. In fact, you wouldn’t be wrong to call it the segment leader with the Miata being its only real rival.
The 2019 Toyota 86, which as once the Scion FR-S, is a nippy sports car that delivers a very raw experience. Now, its competitors may be able to outrace on any given day, but that’s where their superiority ends.
When it comes to striking a fine balance between practicality and performance, there are no rivals to the 86. In fact, track enthusiasts will find immense joy in the knowledge that the 86 can accommodate an extra set of tires in the trunk, after the rear seats are folded.
The 86 may not boast a whole lot of creature comforts or features, but it makes up for all that with sharp handling, stellar performance, and top-notch braking.
The 2019 Toyota 86 is powered by 2.0 liter flat-4 from Subaru. The unit pushes out 205 horsepower and a decent 156 lb-ft of torque. The automatic transmission only enjoys about 200 horses. The 86 is an RWD (Rear Wheel Drive). Transmission is a 6-speed automatic.
Most of the power is delivered at the redline, which means delayed shifting is a good way to go about things in the 86.
For a compact sports car, the 86 does enjoy a few useful features. You get a touchscreen infotainment system with Bluetooth. You also have a rearview camera, air conditioning, and keyless entry.
The 86 GT comes with a color information display on the dash and a dual-zone climate control system.
The federal government gave the 86 four out of five stars for frontal crash, which is great, but the vehicle aces the rollover test with a five-star rating. The 2018 86 received an “Acceptable” rating from the IIHS.
However, the test scores are expected to be higher this time. Other than that, the 86 remains the same in terms of overall safety.
